Fundamental Skills in Vascular Surgery

This course is aimed at general surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons at any stage of training. It focusses on assessment and management of patients presenting with vascular or limb threatening pathology, and offers hands on skills for limb salvage with minor amputations, vein harvest and reconstruction, embolectomy in addition to major limb amputation techniques.

Day 1

0900 Assessment and immediate management of vascular patients

1030 Tea

1100 Cadaveric session 1: Compartment fasciotomy – lower limb and upper limb & Long saphenous vein harvest / SFJ ligation

1230 Lunch

1330 Cadaveric session 2: Minor amputations. Ray amputation of toe & Transmetatarsal amputation

1630 Feedback and close

Day 2

0830 Cadaveric session 3: Major limb amputation. Below knee amputation – long posterior flap and skew / Through the knee amputation / Above knee amputation

1200 Lunch

1300 Cadaveric session 4: Embolectomy techniques and trauma. Femoral artery exposure and repair / Brachial artery exposure and repair / Extraperitoneal approach to iliac and control
